When rectal cancer is caught and treated at an early stage, most people recover completely. At early stages sometimes removing the cancer is all that is needed to cure rectal cancer. At later stages, you may also need chemotherapy and radiation to cure the disease. When rectal cancer reaches stage 4, chances for curing the disease are slim, but treatment can extend life.
