How effective is rabies treatment?

In the United States, no one who has gotten prompt rabies treatment after a bite has ever died from rabies. By the 1990s, modern treatment reduced rabies deaths in the United States to one or two a year, and they were usually people who didn't see a doctor because they didn't realize they had been exposed to rabies. Once symptoms start, there is no treatment, and rabies is almost always fatal.
