Is pulmonary fibrosis the same as hypersensitivity pneumonitis?

Pulmonary fibrosis is the permanent scarring of the lungs, which interferes with a person's ability to breathe. If a person develops chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), it can lead to the permanent lung disease of pulmonary fibrosis. Chronic HP can occur from repeated exposure to a substance that causes an allergic reaction in the lungs. When left untreated or if the exposure continues, permanent lung scarring and damage can be the result.
