What causes pulmonary fibrosis?

Most of the time, the cause of pulmonary fibrosis is unknown. In these cases, the disease is referred to as idiopathic. Researchers have suggested that tobacco smoke, some viruses, heredity, some medications, radiation, exposure to environmental pollutants, gastroesophageal reflux disease, some lung infections, and other disorders may trigger the condition. If the cause of pulmonary fibrosis can be identified, it is usually one of these things.
