What are possible complications of exfoliative psoriasis?

Exfoliative psoriasis (also called erythrodermic psoriasis) is one of the least common but most serious types of the autoimmune condition psoriasis. Psoriasis causes the body to produce skin cells too fast. When people develop exfoliative psoriasis, they experience widespread reddening and shedding of their skin that can lead to a number of serious complications.

Complications from exfoliative psoriasis can include unregulated body temperature, infection, pneumonia, and congestive heart failure. This is because the heart is working overtime to pump enough blood to the skin.

Because these complications can be life threatening, people experiencing exfoliative psoriasis should get medical care right away. They may require hospitalization and intravenous fluids.
