What causes guttate psoriasis?

Doctors believe guttate psoriasis results when the body mistakes healthy cell tissue for a foreign substance, triggering an inflammatory immune system response. The disorder appears to be an inherited condition and is not contagious. It usually develops suddenly after a bacterial or viral infection such as strep throat or an upper respiratory infection. Guttate psoriasis can also be triggered by stress; a skin injury such as sunburn, insect bites, or wounds; and some medications.
