What are the treatment options for scalp psoriasis?

Treatment options for scalp psoriasis depend on the severity of each individual's condition. Usually, topical medications are the first treatment option used. Since it can be difficult to apply ointments to the scalp area, some medications are available as shampoos, foams, or liquid solutions that are easier to apply to the scalp. Topical medications may contain corticosteroids, vitamin D, and retinoids, which all help treat the inflammation of scalp psoriasis. Sometimes, over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid and coal tar may be enough to treat scalp psoriasis symptoms. In some cases, light therapy or phototherapy can be helpful. For more severe cases of scalp psoriasis, stronger oral medications may be necessary. It's important to talk with your doctor about which treatment options are right for you.
