How can I avoid getting psoriasis if it runs in my family?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Psoriasis appears to run in families, but that doesn't mean that you are destined to develop this skin disorder.

Psoriasis is a general name for several disorders that cause skin symptoms, including redness, bumps, scaliness, itching, and others. Psoriasis is associated with other physical symptoms, such as chills and exhaustion. Taking certain steps can lower your risk.

There are some indications that psychological stress can bring on a case of psoriasis for the first time. Controlling your stress level may help ward off this skin problem.

Psoriasis also seems to be more common among people who live in cold, dry climates. Moving to a warm, less-arid climate or using a humidifier in your home may lower your risk. See a dermatologist to discuss how you can lower your risk of psoriasis.
