With erythrodermic psoriasis, it is not really a question of prevention so much as an issue of risk reduction. You are more disposed toward an erythrodermic psoriasis flare if you have plaque psoriasis or von Zumbusch pustular psoriasis. Alcoholism, infection, stress, sunburn, corticosteroid use, and suddenly stopping psoriasis medication can trigger an erythrodermic flare. If you know of a potential trigger that affects you, you can prevent symptoms by avoiding that trigger.
Doctors know several triggers that can lead to an episode of exfoliative psoriasis. These include alcoholism, emotional stress, certain medications such as lithium and anti-malarial drugs, abruptly stopping a systemic psoriasis medication, and severe sunburn.
