What is isolated protein?

Ms. Ashley Koff, RD
Nutrition & Dietetics
The word protein gets thrown around a lot today because there are so many sources of protein including vegetarian ones like: whey, egg white, hemp, rice (brown/white), quinoa, soy, and peas to name a few. A key energy distinction is whether the protein is isolated -- which means extracted from the whole food through some processing -- or if it remains in the whole-food form. This can make a big difference in nutrient quality and digestibility.
