Why is active surveillance used to treat prostate diseases?

Depending on the type and severity of your prostate disease, the best form of treatment may be active surveillance, sometimes known as "watchful waiting" or "expectant management." Active surveillance entails getting annual exams and making changes in diet and habit to lessen the effects of symptoms. People with early-stage prostate cancer may also use active surveillance as a treatment. For some men, the disease may advance so slowly during their lifetimes that the side effects of active treatment (infection, incontinence, impotence) outweigh the benefits.
