Finasteride improves urinary symptoms modestly over the long term. Doxazosin has been reported to improve symptoms better over both the short and long term. It may take 6 to 12 months before symptoms improve. These drugs are more effective in men with larger prostates. Finasteride has also been shown to reduce blood in the urine.

Finasteride has been shown to decrease blood in the urine caused by prostate bleeding. Dutasteride has not been studied for its effects on prostate-related bleeding, but it may provide a similar benefit.
