What is norethindrone?

Norethindrone is a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. It is used to treat menstrual disorders, such as an irregular cycle or abnormal bleeding, as well as endometriosis (a painful disorder where the lining of a woman's uterus grows in other nearby parts of her body, such as her ovaries). It is also a component of some birth control pills. Norethindrone stops the lining of a woman's uterus from growing and changing by affecting hormone levels. Norethindrone is the generic medication name; it is also sold under a variety of brand names, including Aygestin.
