Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy and helps to maintain a healthy pregnancy. The word progestogen refers to any hormone compound that affects the uterus, such as naturally occurring progesterone. Synthetic versions of progesterone are called progestins. For example, the compounds used to provide a progesterone effect in birth control pills are progestins.
