Is endermologie cellulite treatment effective?

Arthur W. Perry, MD
Plastic Surgery
Endermologie for cellulite reduction has been around for more than a decade. It is a technique that lifts, stretches, and squeezes skin between two rollers -- basically a glorified massage. Certain studies have shown a benefit to Endermologie, but analysis of the studies showed various design flaws.

Endermologie defies common sense: how and why would massage decrease cellulite and fat? The massage may temporarily increase the blood supply to the fat and skin and stretch the skin. It most likely causes swelling, and that may account for the improvement in the cellulite in some studies and in some photos of patients. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration's approval of Endermologie is for the "temporary improvement in the appearance of cellulite and circumferential body measurements." Note the words carefully. If it does temporarily work, shouldn't standard deep massage do the same thing?
