How are surgical complications prevented in elderly or ill patients?

Joane Goodroe
Nursing

Surgical complications are prevented in elderly or ill patients in several ways.

  • Give a very accurate history to your doctor.
  • If you have had a recent fever, let your doctor know.
  • If you smoke, be honest with your physician about how many cigarettes you smoke and how long you have been smoking.
  • If you smoke, stop smoking as long before surgery as possible.
  • If you drink alcohol or use any type of other drugs, tell your physician.
  • Follow all physician instructions before surgery. Stop taking over the counter medicines without your physician’s knowledge.

The more your physician understands about your daily habits and condition before surgery, the better he or she will be able to anticipate problems.
