Premature rupture of membranes is caused by several factors including inflammation and sexually transmitted diseases. Some other causes include poor diet, stretching of the amniotic sac (for example, when there is too much amniotic fluid), and inflammation. Infection and smoking may also be a cause of premature rupture of membranes. But in most individual cases, the cause is unknown.
