Over-the-counter hydroquinone preparations are often used to treat this condition, helping to fade the darkened pigmentation. Epidermal melasma seems to be the type most responsive to treatments such as bleaching cream. Prescription (4%) strength hydroquinone is a chemical that inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Azelaic acid (20%) is thought to decrease the activity of melanocytes. Some women benefit from facial peels that use the stronger percentage of alpha hydroxyacids or chemical peels with glycolic acid.
