Is hyperemesis gravidarum caused by being pregnant with twins?

Normal bouts of morning sickness are primarily caused by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. When morning sickness is so severe that nausea and vomiting are persistent and weight loss occurs, this is called hyperemesis gravidarum. One possible cause of this severe form of morning sickness is being pregnant with twins or other multiples. If your doctor suspects hyperemesis gravidarum, you may receive an ultrasound to detect the presence of twins or other multiples.
