How do other illnesses affect chorioamnionitis?

Other illnesses can increase a woman's risk of developing chorioamnionitis because they adversely affect the immune system's ability to fight infection. These illnesses can include emotional problems, malnutrition, or chronic illness in the mother. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also increase the likelihood of developing the disease because of the proximity to the uterus.
