How does oligohydramnios affect the body?

Oligohydramnios may complicate pregnancy if it occurs over a long period of time. Because the amniotic fluid helps support the fetus, a deficiency can affect the development of organs. A reduced amount of amniotic fluid has been linked with poorly developed fetal lungs (pulmonary hypoplasia) or other physical deformities. It may also cause complications during delivery such as compression of the umbilical cord or an overly dense amount of fetal meconium (waste products) that can cause choking.
