How does a low lying placenta affect the body?

A low lying placenta, on its own, will not affect the body substantially. If it is a case of placenta previa, where the placenta is lying so low that it blocks the cervix, then there may be bleeding involved. Too much bleeding, known as hemorrhage, may occur during labor and delivery (and possibly continue on for a couple of hours). If the bleeding can't be controlled, then the body is not able to function, leading to shock and, in some cases, death.
