How can a high-risk pregnancy be prevented?

Preventing high-risk pregnancy is not as black and white as it may seem. Women might be able to minimize their risks and optimize their health during pregnancy.

To help prevent or reduce the chance of a high-risk pregnancy, women should have a pre-conception appointment with an obstetrics provider to discover and hopefully avoid any potential problems. This visit is especially helpful if a woman has any chronic medical problems like diabetes or high blood pressure, uses substances or has previously had a high risk pregnancy. Also, women in their reproductive years should  take a vitamin or supplement every day that contains folic acid. This is necessary for proper development of the spinal cord in the fetus. Most of the important organs develop quite early during the first few weeks of the pregnancy.
