Does oligohydramnios have any complications?

The extent of amniotic fluid deficiency in oligohydramnios and the trimester it occurs in can both influence how seriously it affects the mother and her fetus. In fact, many cases of oligohydramnios do not cause serious pregnancy complications. However, if oligohydramnios occurs in the first half of pregnancy and persists for an extended period of time, it can cause the underdevelopment of fetal lungs, a condition known as pulmonary hypoplasia. This can result in life-threatening respiratory complications after the fetus has been born. Similarly, if oligohydramnios occurs in the second half of pregnancy, it can cause stunted growth in the fetus' limbs or internal organs. If the oligohydramnios persists until delivery, it can cause difficulties in labor such as umbilical cord suppression (cutting off the flow of nutrients from the fetus) or an abundance of fetal waste (meconium), which can cause choking.
