When should I call my doctor if I am taking prednisone?

If you're taking the steroid prednisone, call your doctor right away if you experience:
  • vision problems
  • eye pain
  • depression
  • confusion
  • uncontrollable shaking of your hands
  • very upset stomach or stomach pain
  • irregular heartbeat
  • hives
  • rash
  • itching
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • unusual swelling
  • signs of infection (fever, chills, cough, sore throat)
  • seizures
  • loss of contact with reality
  • muscle twitching or tightening
  • vomiting
  • lightheadedness
  • sudden weight gain 
  • shortness of breath 
  • stomach pain
  • bloody stools 
  • numbness, burning or tingling in the extremities
All of these can be signs of serious side effects of the medication.

You should also call your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking prednisone.
