Although influenza shouldn't be shrugged off -- it still kills a few hundred women annually -- pneumonia is a far greater threat. In 2006, more than 38,000 women died of pneumonia. In fact, evidence indicates that most of the deaths in the 1918-19 flu pandemic resulted from pneumonia, after the pneumonia bacteria invaded lungs already compromised by the flu virus.
