How do other illnesses affect pneumonia?

Having another illness can have a big impact on pneumonia. People with chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, weakened immunity, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are more likely to get pneumonia. They are also more likely to need to be hospitalized and to develop complications. Sometimes people who are already hospitalized or in a nursing home because they have health problems get pneumonia. Because they are already weakened by serious illness, they are more likely to develop complications or die.
