How does pneumonia affect children?

This lung infection, pneumonia, marked by a big ol' cough and fever, can be viral or bacterial, and it makes kids feel like they've been walloped by a ten-pound boxing glove over and over and over. Bacterial pneumonias typically cause children to get sick suddenly (and they usually follow a bout of strep), whereas kids who get viral pneumonia tend to slide into it more gradually. And here's one symptom you may not recognize: Abdominal pain or neck pain can be a sign of pneumonia because of referred pain from above the diaphragm toward the bottom or top of the lungs.
