How do medications treat pleurisy?

Depending on the cause, medications can treat the cause of pleurisy as well as provide symptom relief. If pleurisy is caused by a bacterial infection, for example, it can be treated with antibiotics. To help treat symptoms, your doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen that will help reduce the tissue inflammation that causes your pain. Other painkillers like acetaminophen may help relieve your pain, and cough medicines with codeine will help keep a cough that causes further pain under control. You should talk to your doctor about which medications will be helpful to treat your pleurisy.
