Can pleurisy be prevented?

Pleurisy can be prevented in some cases, either by preventing medical conditions that can cause it or by treating those conditions early. There are vaccinations for certain kinds of pneumonia, one of the common causes of pleurisy. Be careful of your exposure to toxic substances, such as asbestos, which can cause lung conditions that lead to pleurisy. Treating bacterial infections in the respiratory system is one of the main ways to prevent pleurisy from developing. If you feel that you are at risk for pleurisy, talk to your doctor about prevention.
