The symptoms of pleurisy include sharp chest pain when breathing, shortness of breath, dry cough, and sometimes fever and chills depending on the cause of the disorder. Plural effusion (caused when fluids get into the pleural cavity) actually lubricates the lungs and can cause the sharp pain to disappear. However, if too much fluid gets in the cavity, that is a problem that will require treatment.
