What health problems can pituitary tumors cause in children?

Marvin Bergsneider, MD
Neurosurgery
While pituitary tumors are very uncommon in children, they can present health problems. If they are hormonally-secreting tumors, there will be a couple of issues. Even though the tumor itself behaves benignly, the hormones it produces can be very serious. One example is when children develop gigantism. If both parents are 5'6" and your child is 6'2" and there's no history of tallness in your family, you should suspect that a pituitary tumor is causing this abnormal growth. Children with gigantism have many other features of acromegaly (growth of tissues and limbs), such as a deep voice and large hands.
