If a prosthesis does not fit correctly, it can be uncomfortable and should be checked out. Even when a prosthesis does fit properly, pain on the stump has been reported and can sometimes be massaged away. If that doesn't work, mild pain relievers or even narcotics may be necessary. Pain there also may be due to an infection or the skin being rubbed raw. Pain can also occur in other parts of the body, such as the shoulders, hips, or spine, due to a prosthesis changing the way a person walks.
