How does surgery affect people with speech impairments?

If a speech impairment is caused by condition that can be repaired by surgery, then surgery can be a helpful treatment for a speech impairment. For instance, a physical condition such as a cleft lip or palate that can cause a speech impairment may be surgically repaired, which may eliminate or reduce the speech impairment. Ask your doctor if surgery is an option to help treat your or your child's speech impairment.
