The first step in diagnosing paralysis is to go to your doctor for a physical exam, which will include a review of your symptoms and your family's medical history. Your doctor will talk to you about your symptoms, and may order more specialized tests, such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Your doctor may also refer you to a doctor who specializes in conditions that affect the brain, called a neurologist.
