How are animal phobias diagnosed?

Animal phobias are diagnosed by clinical evaluation of an individual's symptoms and medical, psychiatric and social history. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association, lists the criteria for a diagnosis of a specific phobia. A medical professional can evaluate an individual based upon the individual's responses to questions designed to screen for specific phobias as defined by DSM.
