What causes animal phobias?

Although the cause of animal phobia is still unknown, studies indicate a link between a parent's phobias and that of their child. The child may learn to fear the animal by observing a parent's reaction. Other factors that may trigger the development of an animal phobia are trauma, genetics, and brain chemicals. Animal phobias may arise during childhood or may arise suddenly during adolescence or adulthood, sometimes occurring unexpectedly when the individual comes into contact with an animal that previously did not elicit anxiety.
