Although the cause of a situational phobia is still unknown, two factors which may trigger a phobia are the occurrence of a traumatic event and the existence of the phobia in a parent. Because of the link between a parent's specific phobia and that of a child, parents can help prevent the development of situational phobias in their children by seeking treatment for themselves. Situational phobias almost always can be effectively treated through therapy, and so by seeking treatment of a phobia, parents can overcome their phobias and prevent them from influencing their children.
