Who should not take Stribild?

You should not take Stribild (elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine and tenofovir), a prescription medicine used to treat human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1), if you are taking other antiretroviral medicines.

You should take Stribild only if you are an adult. You should not take Stribild while breastfeeding, for two reasons. Most important is that you should not breastfeed at all if you are infected with HIV-1, because you could pass the virus to your baby. It's also not clear whether the drug could pose risks for a nursing baby.

Stribild can interact with many other prescription medications; some drugs can change the effectiveness of Stribild, and Stribild can also change the effectiveness of other drugs. Interactions can also increase your risk for severe side effects.

Examples of drugs that you should not take if you're on Stribild include other HIV-1 medications and medications containing tenofovir, emtricitabine, adefovir or lamivudine. In addition, be sure to tell your doctor if you take or use:
  • hormone-based birth control pills or patches
  • medications to prevent the rejection of an organ transplant
  • high blood pressure medications
  • antacids containing aluminum, magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate
  • depression medications
  • St. John's wort or products containing this herb
Before you start taking Stribild, be sure to give your doctor a complete medical history. Tell him or her about all your other medications (prescription or over-the-counter), as well as any supplements you take. Once you're on Stribild, do not start taking another drug or supplement without talking with your doctor first.
