What is phentermine and topiramate used for?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Phentermine can help people eat less by suppressing their appetite. Topiramate, a drug used for seizures, can also help people lose weight. But it is not clear exactly how it works for weight loss. These two drugs are combined into a single pill, called Qsymia. Qsymia is used with diet and exercise for long-term weight management. It is for people with a BMI of 30 or above, or those with a BMI of 27 or above and another condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
