What should I know about Kyprolis before starting treatment?

Before you start taking Kyprolis (carfilzomib), you should know that the anticancer drug is used to treat multiple myeloma (a kind of blood cancer) after the first and second lines of treatments are unsuccessful. Typically, Kyprolis is given by infusion two days in a row each week for three weeks. Next is a rest period of about two weeks.

Before starting treatment with Kyprolis, be sure your doctor knows about all your other medicines (prescription and over-the-counter), as well as any supplements you take. During treatment, check with your doctor before you take any other medicines, even over-the-counter ones.

Give your doctor a complete medical history before starting Kyprolis. Be sure to mention if you have diabetes, blood pressure problems or heart, lung, kidney or liver disease.

It's important to avoid pregnancy during treatment with Kyprolis and for some months after you finish treatment.

You should know that Kyprolis may cause infusion reactions and heart, kidney, lung or nerve damage and may also cause your blood pressure to drop.

You should know that your doctor will do blood tests throughout your treatment to monitor you for side effects on blood cell counts, blood chemistry and blood platelets.

Do not get vaccines during or after your treatment without talking to your doctor first.
