What is triple sulfa?

Triple sulfa is no longer available in the United States.

Triple sulfa is a name used for the combination of three sulfaantibiotic drugs - sulfacetamide, sulfathiazole, and sulfabenzamide. It was once used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV) caused by the bacterium Gardnerellavaginalis.Although triple sulfa wasonce sold under a number of brand names (including Sultrin), many are no longer available. Triple sulfa is no longer commonly prescribed for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis because it was found to be ineffective as a treatment for BV. The medication is used either as a cream with an applicator or as a tablet suppository. Sulfa antibiotics work by slowing the growth of bacteria, in this case on the skin surfaces of the vagina.
