What is phenazopyridine?

Phenazopyridine is no longer available in the United States.

Phenazopyridine treats symptoms related to the lower urinary tract, which consists of your bladder and urethra. This drug relieves pain, irritation, burning, and urgent or increased urination. These symptoms may be caused by a urinary tract infection, surgery, catheter, or other conditions. Although phenazopyridine treats symptoms of a urinary tract infection, it does not treat the infection itself. This drug belongs to a class of drugs called miscellaneous genitourinary tract agents.
