What is norethisterone enantate?

Norethisterone enantate is no longer available in the United States.

Norethisterone enantate is an injectable form of birth control containing a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. Generally lasting for one to three months, each dose of norethisterone enantate prevents fertilization from taking place by preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs, thinning out the uterine lining, and thickening the mucous around the cervix. Women who have normal menstrual cycles but are not able to tolerate the side effects of oral contraceptives are good candidates for this birth control method. Norethisterone enantate has been found to be 99.6 percent effective in preventing pregnancy and may lessen painful periods in some women. Using this form of birth control requires regular visits to the doctor for the injection, which is giving in either the buttocks or the arm.

Norethisterone enantate is used 91 countries throughout the world, but it is not available for sale in the United States. Norethisterone enantate is also being studied to as a form of injectable male contraception when combined with the male hormone testosterone.
