Nifurtimox is an antiprotozoal medication used to treat Chagas' disease, also referred to as American trypanosomiasis. Chagas' disease is a parasitic infection transmitted by insect bites that is most common in Latin America. Nifurtimox kills the parasites living in a person's body. The medication is not currently available for purchase in the United States because they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is possible to get Nifurtimox through investigational protocols at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
