What is melarsoprol?

Melarsoprol is no longer available in the United States.

Melarsoprol is an antiprotozoal medication used to treat trypanosomiasis, sometimes called African sleeping sickness or trypanosome fever. This disease, which is confined to sub-Saharan Africa, is caused by one-celled parasites. Melarsoprol treats trypanosomiasis by depriving these parasites of energy, thus killing them. You cannot find this drug in United States or Canadian pharmacies, but if you contract trypanosomiasis on a trip and return home, a U.S doctor may obtain melarsoprol from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
