Mebaral is the brand name version of the drug mephobarbital. Mephobarbital is a member of a group of medications called barbiturates. Mebaral acts by slowing or depressing the function of the nervous system, including the brain. It is used to treat anxiety, apprehension, and tension; when used for this purpose, it acts as a sedating drug, or sedative. Mebaral is also used to treat seizures; when used in this manner, it is considered to be an anticonvulsant.
