What is kanamycin?

Kanamycin is the name of the active ingredient in the brand name antibiotic Kantrex. The brand, however, is no longer available. Kanamycin is clasified as an aminoglycoside antibiotic and is used with other antibiotics to treat and to prevent infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It was used orally to kill bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract before abdominal surgery. However, the oral formulation is no longer available in the US. It has been used to irrigate, or wash out, the abdominal cavity during surgery to prevent infection. Usually, it is administered by injection, intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM), to treat infection.
