What is gemtuzumab ozogamicin?

Gemtuzumab ozogamicin is a prescription injection that is used to help treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in people that are 60 years and older. People are usually prescribed this drug because they cannot take any other cancer medication to treat their AML. This drug is classified as a chemotherapy agent. It works by severing parts of the cell that are needed by cancer cells to survive. Gemtuzumab ozogamicin can be found under the brand name Mylotarg. This drug has been withdrawn from the market in the United States.
