What is Demulen?

Demulen is no longer available in the United States.

Demulen is a brand name version of the generic drug ethynodiol/ethinyl estradiol. It is a birth control medication. Demulen prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation. Put simply, it does not allow your ovaries to release eggs. It also makes it harder for sperm to get to your eggs, and in the event that an egg does become fertilized, it makes it more difficult for the egg to implant itself in your womb. Demulen can be also be used to regulate periods, lessen symptoms associated with your period, and lower your risk of developing cysts on your ovaries as well. Demulen prevents the release of eggs using two hormones, progestin and estrogen.
